Jeff Daniels Is Opening a Restaurant in Chelsea. It's Not a Vanity Project.
JD's Stage Bistro brings wood-fired pizza, live music, and a locally sourced menu to Main Street this spring.
Jeff Daniels has lived in Chelsea for decades. He founded the Purple Rose Theatre there in 1991. He could have gone to Los Angeles and stayed, and he didn't. So when we say that JD's Stage Bistro, his forthcoming restaurant at 117½ South Main Street, is not a celebrity vanity project, we mean it in the most literal sense. This is a local making a bet on his hometown.
The bistro is a partnership between Daniels, his son Ben, Ben's wife Amanda, and Tannin Property Group. Chef Nate Wegryn will run the kitchen, building a menu around wood-fired pizza and locally sourced cuisine. The 100-seat space is divided into three distinct areas: the Stage Room, an intimate venue designed for musical performances with acoustics engineered by Gavin Haverstick of Haverstick Designs; the Bistro itself, a restaurant and cocktail lounge; and a private event space that can accommodate up to 60 guests.
The music component is the detail that separates this from a straightforward restaurant opening. Haverstick's acoustic design work is serious, the kind of investment that signals the Stage Room is meant to be a legitimate listening room, not a dining room with a guy and a guitar in the corner. Steps from the Purple Rose, the bistro extends Daniels' long investment in Chelsea as a place where live performance matters.
Chelsea's Main Street is already more interesting than people outside of Washtenaw County tend to realize. The Common Grill has been a destination for more than 30 years under chef Craig Common. Smokehouse 52 does credible barbecue. Zou Zou's Cafe, Ugly Dog Distillery, The Lakehouse Bakery, and Agricole Farm Stop round out a corridor that rewards a day trip. JD's Stage Bistro slots into that lineup with enough ambition to raise the ceiling without ignoring what already works.
The restaurant is expected to open this spring. We will follow up with menu details and reservation information as they become available.
