Bella Vita Bistro: What's Happening at 200 W Michigan?

The ambitious Italian-French concept planned for the former Bobcat Bonnie's space in Ypsilanti was supposed to open last summer. An update.

In January 2025, local entrepreneurs Kevin Cox, Brian Cox, and Darrel Savos announced plans to transform the former Bobcat Bonnie's building at 200 West Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti into Bella Vita Bistro, an Italian and French restaurant on the main floor with a speakeasy jazz club in the basement. The target was summer 2025. Laith Al-Saadi, the Ann Arbor musician and Voice contestant, was named as an early booked performer for the music venue.

It is now March 2026. The doors have not opened.

I wrote about the 200 West Michigan space in our Ypsilanti storefronts piece, noting that the Bella Vita concept was the most ambitious replacement of the three closings that hit Ypsilanti between October 2024 and September 2025. Ambitious plans and executed plans are different things, and the gap between the announced opening and today deserves an honest accounting.

What We Know

Public information about Bella Vita Bistro's progress has been sparse since the January 2025 announcement. The Eastern Echo reported the initial plans in detail: Italian and French cuisine on the main floor, Hyperion Coffee and baked goods for breakfast, Parisian-style sandwiches for lunch, gourmet pizzas for dinner, and the jazz club downstairs. Architects were finalizing designs at the time of the announcement.

No subsequent construction updates, social media presence, or revised timeline have appeared in local media or online as of this writing. The building at 200 West Michigan does not appear to be operating as a restaurant.

What This Means

Restaurant construction delays are common. Permitting, contractor schedules, supply chain issues, and financing can each add months to a timeline. A summer 2025 target slipping into 2026 is not, by itself, unusual. What is unusual is the silence. Most restaurant projects that are actively progressing put out periodic updates. Bella Vita Bistro has not.

This does not mean the project is dead. It means we don't know. And writing "we don't know" is the honest thing to do when the alternative is speculation.

Why It Matters

The 200 West Michigan space is one of the most visible addresses on Ypsilanti's west side. Bobcat Bonnie's closure in October 2024 was messy: a labor dispute, bounced paychecks, a unionization effort, and a public fallout that made local and regional news. The announcement of Bella Vita felt like a turning point. New local owners with a specific vision and a connection to the community. It was the kind of news Ypsilanti needed.

A year of silence on that promise is a different kind of story. Not a failure story, necessarily. But a waiting story, and Ypsilanti has been doing a lot of waiting on West Michigan Avenue.

If the Cox brothers and Savos are still working toward opening, we would welcome the update. If the project has stalled, the community deserves to know. Either way, 200 West Michigan Avenue is too prominent a space to stay in limbo indefinitely.

We will update this article when new information becomes available.
