Michigan Blueberry Season Starts in July
The fresh window runs into fall, and southwest Michigan remains the center of commercial production.
Fresh Michigan blueberries generally become available in July and continue into fall. The current Michigan Agriculture Facts and Figures lists the fresh season as July through October and describes Michigan as a top-five producing state.
Where the crop is grown
Michigan State University Extension says commercial production is concentrated in southwest Michigan, where acidic sandy soils and Lake Michigan's influence suit highbush blueberries. That does not mean every berry sold in southeast Michigan came from the southwest. Ask the seller for the farm name if origin matters.
The season does not have one fixed peak date. Farms grow multiple varieties, and weather affects when each field is ready. Picking moves across the calendar from July into fall.
Finding blueberries near Ann Arbor
The Ann Arbor Farmers Market operates Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the summer. Vendor attendance and inventory change, so check the market's current social posts or call the office before making a trip for one crop.
For U-pick farms, Michigan Farm Fun's blueberry directory groups farms by region and advises calling ahead because picking conditions change daily. The directory describes the usual U-pick season as July through September, sometimes longer.
Confirm hours, field conditions, and whether the farm is offering U-pick or pre-picked fruit before driving.
Buying and storing
Choose dry berries without visible mold or leaking containers. Keep them refrigerated and wash them under cool running water just before use.
Blueberries freeze well. MSU Extension recommends tray packing: spread the berries in one layer, freeze them, then transfer the frozen fruit to a freezer bag or container. That keeps the berries separate enough to measure later.
For jams or other shelf-stable preserves, use a tested recipe from MSU Extension or the National Center for Home Food Preservation.
A practical plan
Verify the farm, ask when the fruit was picked, and buy an amount that can be eaten or frozen promptly. For a market trip or U-pick day built around blueberries, confirm availability that morning.
