Espy Cafe Opens on West Huron

A new local cafe at 404 W Huron St with a serious espresso program and single-origin sourcing.

Update, May 2026: Espy's beans are roasted at Anthology Coffee in Detroit, not on-site. See correction notice above.

Espy Cafe opened at 404 West Huron Street on March 1 with a serious espresso program: two Decent DE1XXL machines, single-origin sourcing through Semilla and Sundog specialty importers, and a no-tip model with higher base wages and employee ownership shares based on hours worked.

The vast majority of coffee shops in this city buy roasted beans from a wholesaler and serve them on machines that prioritize volume over precision. Espy's equipment investment signals a different priority: coffee as the main event, not a supporting service. West Huron between downtown and the Old West Side has been a quiet stretch for a while, the kind of block you walk through to get somewhere else. A cafe this focused on the cup is a reason to stop.

The rest of the menu is pastries and light fare.

Espy Cafe is at 404 W Huron St, Ann Arbor.
