Jolly Pumpkin Closed Its Midtown Detroit Beer Hall After Eleven Years on Canfield

Jolly Pumpkin Pizzeria & Brewery stopped serving at 441 West Canfield Street at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Daily Detroit posted the closing that afternoon, giving the neighborhood a few hours of notice, and reported that the taproom had been on West Canfield since 2015. Patch put the run at eleven years.

The company announced it in a social media post the same day. "After 11 incredible years, JP is closing its doors," the post said, per ClickOnDetroit. "This isn't goodbye, just see you soon. JP will be back in Detroit, and we can't wait to share what's next." No cause was given in the post, and none has been published since.

What the Canfield room was

Detroit got the biggest version of Jolly Pumpkin. Daily Detroit described a large, casual beer hall with long communal tables and reclaimed wood, pouring Michigan sour ales alongside pizza, truffle fries, and shareable plates built on small-batch Michigan ingredients. The Ann Arbor taproom at 311 South Main is a downtown storefront with a seasonal rooftop. The Dexter brewery and kitchen is a drive with a patio under mature trees. Canfield was the one built to hold a crowd.

It held a notable one. On January 20, 2016, President Obama had lunch there with Mayor Mike Duggan, Shinola founder Tom Kartsotis, physician Tolulope Sonuyi, and General Motors autoworker Teana Dowdell, WXYZ reported at the time. He ordered a JP Burger and truffle fries. A sour-ale brewery is an odd place to stage a presidential lunch, which is a fair measure of what the address had become by its second year: the Midtown room you took a visitor to.

Position helped. Daily Detroit listed the neighbors on that stretch of Canfield as Shinola, City Bird, Nest, and Bon Bon Bon, and noted that Motor City Brewing Works had closed in February. Two beer businesses came off one short block in six weeks.

What is not closing

Patch reported that the Ann Arbor and East Lansing locations remained open, and that Royal Oak and Dearborn had already closed. So the beer is not the loss here. The oak-aged sour program still pours in Ann Arbor and in Dexter, and the company said it intends to come back to Detroit without naming a form or a date.

What closes is a specific kind of room. Eleven years of a large, low-barrier beer hall on a block that has been filling with retail is a real thing to lose. Midtown has places to eat well. It has fewer rooms that size where a group can walk in without a reservation and stay for three hours.

What is next for the space

Spiedo. Crain's Detroit Business reported that the Mediterranean restaurant will take 441 West Canfield, with an opening later in 2026. What Now Detroit reported that chef Brad Greenhill, executive chef and co-owner of Takoi, is behind it, and that the concept started at 307 South Fifth Avenue in Ann Arbor in September 2023 as a rotisserie and griddle kitchen serving flatbread sandwiches, rice bowls, roasted beets, and small plates.

Vertical spits replacing a sour taproom is a full change of use, not a refresh. Jolly Pumpkin says it will be back in Detroit. Canfield will not be the address.
